Historical
note
The
creator of TeLiTor, Umberto, is certainly not a novice in
the industry. His experience dates back to the early '80s.
In 1982
he designed one of the first CAT systems to run on an IBM PC.
At that time all CAT systems were running on very
expensive minicomputers or proprietary hardware.
DOS was just released and WINDOWS were those in your
living room to look out from.
He had
a clear and prophetic vision of what the industry needed.
His skills in developing friendly and efficient software
were acquired and proven since the early '70s, when a 64 Kb CPU
was already considered a wonder.
Umberto,
Paul A. Knaplund, his then business partner, and some of their friends
used to have breakfast with the Microsoft founders and developers
at the technical gatherings that were taking place in Bellevue, WA.
Those
were days of audacious ventures for young guys with software
ingenuity. He felt very fortunate and inspired by meeting such friends. Rapidly he became a well known player in the
world of applications software development and was often
a beta tester for Microsoft development tools.
Umberto
introduced the very first A.I. (Artificial Intelligence)
System for Court Reporting software: PARC™ (Progressive
Automatic Resolution of Conflicts) in 1987. That method was then copied or emulated by other
CAT systems. It is still in use and it is applicable to
any language and stenographic theory without requiring customized
tables for each language.
The PARC system was to be followed by many other
A.I. modules.
Those
of you, who have worked with AdvoCAT, know that it was and
still is one of the best CAT DOS systems ever created.
In 1987,
at the Intersteno (International Conference of Shorthand
Reporters) in Florence, Italy, Umberto's presented yet another
"first". His
knowledge of languages, German, French, Italian, English,
Tagalog, and Spanish, as well as several ancient idioms
like Latin and Greek, came to fruition when he presented
a system that was capable of transcribing STENO into two
different languages simultaneously (in that case Italian
and English). All the top vendors were present (Stenograph,
BaronData, Xscribe) with their truck loads of equipment,
but it was his presentation, performed on a luggable Compaq
and a table top projector that captured the imagination
of the audience and received a standing ovation.
Credit should be given to the talent and courage of one of
his clients, Bob Ferrara of AZ, who did the live transcription,
otherwise known as real-time.
In TeLiTor, we now call it, EasyTime™.
In December of 1989,
ahead of all the imitations and commotion that ensued in
the '90s, Umberto had conceived VideoCAT™ for synchronizing
AUDIO and VIDEO with the TEXT of the transcript. We have
scanned-in the original sales AD (brochure).
In 1991
Umberto's son, Junior, sparked a new concept, and Scriptor™
was born. Scriptor was adapted by the bilingual reporters
of the Canadian Senate, due to its unique capability of
switching between French and English, during live transcription.
Other CAT systems have since imitated also that feature.
Scriptor was the first CAT system adapted for Captioning
in England (ITN) and Ireland (RTE). In 1992,
Stenograph, the world renown manufacturer of shorthand machines,
retained Umberto for developing their international CAT system: SKRIVAE™,
widely used in Brazil and France. SKRIVAE incorporates an especially tailored version of the A.I.
logic that, in a very short time, learned the French language, which has more
than 53,000 homophones.
In 1998,
Umberto was awarded another contract by Caption Colorado
to develop two systems. The first,
PAMS™ (Placement Agency Management System), the second,
a Captioning system for 32-bit
Windows™. With the development of CapCo™ his ingenuity was again in action as
he invented a new patented technology specifically designed
to greatly enhance captioning.
